Matriz Church

Built on the former Jesuit College, this mother church is one of the largest temples in the Azores. This Baroque construction stands out as a good example of the Portuguese 18^th century religious art. The church’s magnificent frontispiece leads to a fabulous interior with gilded woodcarving altarpieces, 17^th century tile panels, a silver altar, stunning pulpits, and an impressive sacristy.
