Morro de Castelo Branco

Morro de Castelo Branco is a nature reserve composed of various geological strata. Considering its steep slopes and white walls, this hill looks like a white castle (castelo branco) and that is how it got its name.

This hill results from a volcanic eruption that occurred about 30 thousand years ago.

Because of its geophysical characteristics and isolation it is an important nesting site for sea birds, especially for the Cory’s Shearwater (Calonnectris diomedea borealis), the Common Tern (Sterna hirundo) and the Little Shearwater (Puffinus assimilis baroli).
