São Sebastião Fort

The Fortress or Castle of São Sebastião stands out from the complex of fortifications on the Bay of Porto Pim. It was built in the 17th century out of volcanic tuff, which is a relatively cheap and easy to handle-material extracted from Monte do Guia.

This castle was an important element for the island’s defense, having played a major role in controlling the entrance by the bay of Porto Pim and the traffic on the island’s southern shore.

It was one of the few military buildings to be rebuilt, around 1817, and roughly until the end of World War 2 it functioned as a prison.
