Windmills

Built in the late 19th century, these rotating windmills comprise two stories. The windmill with triangular or Latin sails follows the Portuguese tradition, while the windmill with rectangular sails follows the Flemish tradition. Their access stairs also worked as a rudder.

Windmills played an essential role for the economy of Faial Island, which was an important cereal producer. Today windmills are a genuine feature of the Azorean landscape.
