Santa Cruz Fort

Built between the 15^th and 17^th centuries, this fortress has been a national monument since 1947.

Castle of Santa Cruz actually played a decisive role in the island’s defense and the Azorean history in general, as important events took place in and around this fortress, namely the occupation of the island by Spain in 1583, and the invasions by the Earl of Cumberland in 1589 and the Earl of Essex in 1596.

The castle has been working as a hotel since the 1960’s.
