Scrimshaw

Opened in 1986 on the top floor of Peter Café Sport, the Scrimshaw Museum displays the largest and most beautiful private collection of Scrimshaw artwork in the world. This "whaling art” dates back to the 19^th century, to the whaling fleets, and consists of sculpting or carving and painting landscaped grounds, religious and whaling scenes or portraits on teeth and bones of sperm whales. In this Museum there is also a multitude of decorative and utilitarian pieces made out of ivory and whale bone, as well as an admirable collection of photographs, manuscripts, maps, books and other documents related to whaling and navigation.
