Caldeira

Caldeira is the crater of the largest volcano on Faial Island, about 400 deep and 2 km of diameter. It is a nature reserve since it shelters rare endemic flora species. Descending to the caldera is not allowed, but one can take the hiking trail that surrounds the crater and which provides breath-taking landscapes of particular volcanological interest.
