Largo do Infante

This square pays tribute to Henry the Navigator, founder of the very first school of navigation in the world and, therefore, responsible for the beginning of the Portuguese Age of Discovery and maritime trade between continents. The highlight of this garden, which overlooks the marina of Horta, is the four Canary Island Date Palms (Phoenix canariensis) planted in the late 19^th century. Various Northern Rata (Metrosiderus robusta) paint the garden red during the month of June. Praça do Infante is par excellence one of the city’s meeting points.
